Cases of oral cancer are on the increase, so it is more important than ever to pay careful attention to any changes in your mouth or any unusual symptoms. It is essential to catch this disease as early as possible. At EVERY check-up we do a full mouth oral cancer screen, you may not ( like a lot of people ) even realise it has been done as its painless and quick but probably the most important part of your annual review (minimum recommended frequency) appointments.

The mouth, lips and tongue can all be affected by mouth cancer. It is characterised by tumors forming in one or more of these areas. Smoking and heavy drinking are known causes of oral cancer which is also more common in men than woman. Most cases are diagnosed in patients over 50.

There are a number of symptoms which could indicate oral cancer, some of which include:

• Mouth ulcers that do not heal after several weeks
• Unexplained, persistent lumps in the mouth or neck
• Unexplained loose teeth, or a lack of healing after an extraction
• Unexplained, persistent numbness of the lips or tongue
• White or red patches on the lining of the mouth
