Inlay & Onlay

Dental inlays and onlays can be used on the back teeth, to give them extra strength and added protection if they have been affected by decay or weakened by large metal fillings, or have worn down over time.

They are a restorative dental treatment and can be used to seal holes or cavities that are too large for traditional fillings as they are made by a highly skilled dental technician.

Inlays and onlays can be made from a range of materials including metal or porcelain, but most patients choose tooth-coloured options so they blend into the mouth and look as natural as possible.

An inlay is cemented within the four corners (or cusps) of the tooth, while an onlay provides extra coverage as it is applied to overlap the corners of a tooth. Both treatments require minimal preparation to a natural tooth before being fixed in place.

There are many reasons why we may recommend an inlay or onlay, these include:

  • To protect a tooth that has been damaged by decay.
  • To protect a tooth that has been worn down, for example by grinding or jaw clenching.
  • To reduce sensitivity to a tooth.
  • To replace silver amalgam fillings which may have weakened the teeth.

Treatment usually takes place over two appointments. At the first one Mitchell will adapt and then take an impression of your tooth, which will then be used by our laboratory to make the inlay or onlay. Once the restoration is ready, we will invite you back in to the practice so it can be fitted and bonded in place.
